A trip to the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic will take us to the birthplace of modern beer. Where once the quality was squandered, now brewed to the highest standards. Resulting in a stimulating environment for over 70 small home-brewers who exchange annually enthusiastic ideas during the festival 'Sun in the Glass. " Hunger trip went looking, and quenched her thirst.

"Dozens of barrels of beer were here flushed down the sewer. You were sick ... "I watch my city guide astonishment. Flushed the sewer? "At the end of 1200 everyone in Pilsen the right to brew beer at home. And that got out of hand. Not all of these small brewers look equally good in quality. Beginning in 1800 were therefore discarded all stocks and became one big new 1839 Civic Brewery built. With the highest quality ever. "Our modern lager was born.

Urquell - the cradle of beer

Pilsen quickly became a rich city. Great brew masters came here in the Pilsner Urquell brewery ( Pilsner Urquell learning) box. Residential buildings were built in a modern rectangular street plan, an opera house and the largest synagogue (outside Israel). In Bohemia, in the west of the Czech Republic, you had to be. I wander through the city park. It's Friday afternoon and youths lounging with a beer in hand. Trams run between old façades, I pass the entrance to the medieval catacombs. Pilsen is relaxed.

Modern production and old cellars

It's 10:00. My tour of the historic Urquell brewery begins when I get to the gate, the pungent smell of hops in my nose. I just finished breakfast on ... "On weekends we do not produce." What smell it if there is indeed produced, I think to myself. I see huge copper brewing kettles, filling lines and storage tanks. But then comes the best part: we go to the cellars. Under the whole site appear to be huge cellars. It's cold and chilly, so perfect to store the barrels of beer.

cold fermentation

In the cellars I hear all about lower-beer: bottom fermentation, cold fermentation, wort, storage and ripening. Yeah, a beer do not just here. The process is much more complicated than a Belgian beer. In the beer cellars I finally get (it's already 10:30, ahem) the opportunity to test the final product. Czech firm with a leather apron tapped a glass straight from the wooden barrel. The beer is still young and not quite clear. And it tastes (for a pint) incredibly fresh and tasty full. I hear the drums now no longer be stored in the old cellars. The kilometers long corridors are too small ...

Bierfeesten

If you have a patent on the name lager, you should be proud of yourself. And that they are therefore in Pilsen! Every summer, held beer parties. But that happens more modest than, say, at the Oktoberfest in Munich. The Pilsener Beer Fest is only one day. It takes place on the grounds of the brewery, a special unfiltered lager is served and there is music and it is by the locals pronounced annual spell.

Sun in the Glass

It's raining a bit when I go on the road to the beer festival " Sun in the Glass ." Every September coming here over 70 mini-breweries and there are more than 250 types of beer to taste. The festival lasts only one day. So I can not wait until the weather is dry and the sun actually shines again in the glass. Host for the festival's microbrewery Purkmistr in Pilsen - Černice and mini brewers from around the world tell each other the secrets of their beer. I'm going around with a special tiny (!) Beer glass and I taste a storm. And modest taste, so does everyone: no one has too much.

From Prague to Plzen

The city of Plzen is easily accessible from Prague. There is a luxury coach (with wifi and free coffee) for less than four euros. And you can already see a lot of one or two nights in Pilsen (and tasting). Good to combine so with a city trip to Prague. Outside the festivals would definitely big primal brewery ( Urquell ) and visit for example the mini breweries Purkmistr and Groll . Purkmistr has a nice beer spa, where you're in a hot tub with beer and meanwhile self draining your beer.
